The fire project

Das gezähmte FeuerThe fire project - FIRE CLASS III - Students create fire and art

Berlin artist Kain Karawahn taught students from Berlin-Moabit to handle fire responsibly. The children assimilate their experience in drawings, collages and photos. These can now be seen in the "Fire class III - Students create fire and art" in the Mitte Museum in Gesundbrunnen. It will open on Thursday, 17. December, at 4 p.m. Afterwards we will have a "fire festival" with a campfire, children's punch and gingerbread in the Museum yard.
Fire has always been an extreme fascination to humans. In our present society it is often reduced to damage, danger and destruction. Parents forbid their offspring to play with fire. Teachers only mention fire in chemistry and physics classes. As a result, fire is seen as forbidden! Karawahn challenges this concept and shows an alternative.
Based on his teaching model "Counter-fire", which was awarded a prize, he shows six to ten year olds another way of handling fire. He received a first place prize for this concept in the 2008 competition "Children to the Olympus! Schools cooperate with culture". The competition is put on every year by the Kulturstiftung der Länder (Cultural foundation of German States) (patron: Federal President Horst Köhler). Under the title "Fire class III", students from primary schools Carl-Bolle-Grundschule, Gotzkowsky-Grundschule, James-Krüss-Grundschule and Wartburg-Schule in the district of Mitte participated in this experience.
