The Passage and the Palm House
19th century architectural photography from Berlin

Hermann Rückwardt: Palmenhaus im Humboldthain, 1889, Mitte MuseumCabinet exhibition as part of the 3rd European Month of Photography in Berlin
16 Nov 2008 to 12 April 2009

Berlin photography from the 19th century includes a special element of architectural photography - documented images of historic buildings as well as photos of new buildings of the time.
The photographers took an analytical approach. They concentrated on the spatial arrangement of the buildings and the linear structures of the walls and facades, similar to architectural drawings.
The clients of the elaborate, costly and detailed images were the architects, builders and the administration. The photographs were published as works of reference and were widely distributed among the professional community.

The Mitte Museum possesses more than one hundred of these images - photos of buildings erected by public authorities, photographed for the Berlin Magistrate between 1875 and 1914. The cabinet exhibition shows a selection from this stock, among them views of buildings which do not exist any longer.
