The 2012 International Sound Art Festival is focused on a very special area of music and sound, the basis of any musical expression whatsoever: the human voice.
During this event, a new format is to be tested and examined from the artistic point of view: It approaches the topic in different avenues, putting these in a counterpoint relationship. Concerts featuring a wide range of formats, an interactive audio exhibition with sound art and voices from history and the present, a symposium, sound walks, historical guided tours with sound, singing lessons and a workshop. The main focus here is, on one hand, the quality of authenticity, and, on the other hand, the field of experimental soundscapes in the noise world and the sound environment - two elements which are of particular importance in modern music and sound art.
The most advanced technique will be used: The "Berliner Lautsprecher-Orchester (Berlin Loudspeaker Orchestra)" is responsible for the electroacoustic and live-electronic sound projections. Additionally, there will be a concert for the new digital instrument known as the "strophonion". Live streams of the concerts and a twitter feed will also ensure the internet coverage of everything that happens.
Nevertheless, the 2012 Sound Art Festival is not just focused on the virtual, but above all on the direct sensory experience of things - a decelerated, intellectual, mental and physical perception, on a wide variety of levels. Another novelty is the incorporation and relation of non-artistic aspects of sound expressions by philosophers, linguists or a voice teacher, as well as historic voices, even from the realm of politics, which allows for getting a sense of another, or a former sense of Berlin. All of this does not happen in empty space, but in the city, in the district of Mitte-Wedding and in our quarter. This vocal art is not designed to appeal only to experts, but has the ambition to reach all members of the public and perhaps even inspire them to be interested in something they were not familiar with before. This is to be achieved through a large number of presentations at various locations in the city, by testing out a wide variety of formats (from the swarm in the street to a 1:1 concert) and, above all, by their adequate and creative staging.
In the course of the festival, various areas of vocal expression unfold and intertwine - which may be conceivable only in Berlin, the "Capital of Sound Art".
